September Featured Artist: Emily's Army

Emily's Army (L to R:  Max Becker, Joey Armstrong, Travis Neumann, Cole Becker)
Fortunately for Green Day fans and beyond, singer Billie Joe Armstrong reproduced and passed along his wonderful musical genes.

Drummer Joey Armstrong, 16, followed in the footsteps of his old man by starting teen pop-punk band Emily's Army with brothers Cole (vocals/guitar) and Max Becker (bass), and Travis Neumann (guitar). Their debut album, Don't Be A Dick, was produced by Billie Joe and recorded in only four days at Jingletown Recordings in Oakland, CA.

New York City got a small taste of Emily's Army last year at the Bowery Electric when they opened for Green Day's side project, The Foxboro Hot Tubs. Since then, they've mainly performed locally on the west coast, but recently returned back east on their very first tour

On August 9th, Emily's Army played a show at The Stolen Sleeves Collective, which is actually a fan's basement located in Brooklyn. As happy as I was not getting mugged during my seven-block walk from the subway, I was even happier to check out a full Emily's Army set once and for all. Before the show, the band sat at their merch booth, more than willing to meet the fans that came out to see them. It turns out the Becker brothers are quite the flirts, as they immediately informed me that the purchase of their CD comes with a "free kiss" and later wrote "You're beautiful" on my CD. As adorable as they are, my adult self traded in the free kiss for a free hug instead.

During their half hour set, I was extremely impressed by how they already have grown as a band. Since Emily's Army is comprised of teenagers, they most definitely have the time to get progressively better. The band also writes their own music, an admirable trait at such a young age.

In the past year they were featured in huge music publications such as Rolling Stone, Spin, and on MTV.com. Many have wondered if this is only because of their relation to Green Day or they really can hold their own. Well, maybe it is a little of both...but does it really matter?

The lyrics from their first single "Broadcast This" clearly state:  "I don't wanna listen to what's on the radio. Boring music...Depressing talk shows. It would be nice to hear something that I musically enjoy..."

After listening to this album, it did bring me back to '94--The era of Green Day's Dookie. And that's always something I "musically enjoy."

Take a look at their video for "Broadcast This":

Sting's Birthday Bash

The legendary Sting will be celebrating his 60th birthday in the best city ever with some very special guests.

A concert at the Beacon Theatre in NYC will feature artists Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, will.i.am, Rufus Wainwright, Billy Joel, Mary J. Blige and more. Tickets are on sale only to Sting fan club members ranging from $250 - $2,500.

That's one expensive party.

Nirvana Bassist Attempts to Relive His Peak

Krist Novoselic, the remaining member of Nirvana whom no one ever seems to remember, will participate in performing the former grunge band's Nevermind album in its entirety for "The Nevermind Live in Sky Church" benefit show. The event will take place on September 20 at the EMP Museum's Sky Church in Seattle.

Novoselic will also be joined by other local Seattle bands including Fastbacks, Vaporland, The Long Winters, Valis, Crypts and others. The museum is hosting a Nirvana exhibit from now until April 2013.

Krist Novaselic: Then and now.
Nevermind was released in 1991 and has sold over 30 million copies. A reissued version will be released on September 27, including previously unreleased songs and rarities. The album is considered one of the best rock albums of all time by many.

Dave Grohl has plans that night, as he will be performing in Cleveland with the Foo Fighters. Therefore, the moral of the story is that in the past 17 years Kurt Cobain has probably accomplished more dead than Krist Novaslic alive.

Evanescence Hit the Road

Amy Lee
Evanescence announced they will be embarking on a tour this fall in support of their new self-titled album to be released on October 11. This will be their first album since 2006's The Open Door.

MTV luckily took a break from airing Jersey Shore marathons to debut Evanescence's new single "What You Want" this week. Perfectly-pitched singer Amy Lee still continues to belt out those notes that many rock singers would fail to do.

The tour begins on October 2 with a stop in Brazil at Rock In Rio and will continue through the United States and Europe with support act Rival Sons.

New From The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins (a.k.a. Billy Corgan and some new musicians no one cares about) will be debuting new music from Oceania during their upcoming tour in October.

Oceania will be the band's first album since 2007's Zeitgeist and is scheduled to be released sometime early next year. Additionally, the band recently announced a reissuing of back albums over the course of three years:

2011: Gish, Siamese Dream & Pisces Iscariot
2012: Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness, The Aeroplane Flies High & Adore
2013: Machina/The Machines of God & Machina II: The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music

This is completely necessary because I'm sure Smashing Pumpkins fans just can't wait to re-buy the eight albums they already have in addition to Oceania.

Smashing Pumpkins Tour Dates:
10/5 Los Angeles, CA - Wiltern Theatre
10/7 Oakland, CA - The Fox Theatre

Green Day to Play Secret Gig

Green Day performing at the St. James Theater
April 24, 2011
Green Day announced on their official website they will be performing a secret benefit show tomorrow at The Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa, CA.

This came as a pleasant surprise to fans, as it is known Green Day has been busy writing and recording for their new album to be released next year. The band's last concert took place in April when they surprised fans with an hour long set at New York City's St. James Theater following the final curtain call of Green Day's Broadway play, American Idiot.

Rumors are surfacing that this show will preview some of the band's upcoming material since the venue will not be allowing cameras or cell phones into the building. We can only hope this is true!

Tickets are first come, first serve at the door and all proceeds will be donated to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Kings Of Leon Attempt to Dispose of the Evidence

Kings of Leon's management have attempted to remove all footage of a recent show in Dallas when singer Caleb Followill tells the crowd, "I'm gonna go backstage and I'm gonna vomit, I'm gonna drink a beer" before leaving the stage and not returning. The remaining 28 dates of their U.S. tour were cancelled a day later due to "vocal issues and exhaustion."

What, exactly, is the point of this? Hasn't the band and those associated lost enough time and money due to the cancellation of this tour? It's been revealed that the band owes $15 million to anyone that has lost money from the tour. I don't think Kings of Leon's management realizes that once a video is on the Internet, it is there forever--No matter how many times it's removed. And if they think footage removal means it didn't happen then they are sadly mistaken.

With that said, I suppose there is limited time to view the footage on my posting: Kings of Leon Cancel Tour, Hint At Personal Issues, so hurry while you still can.

'The Throne' Revamp Tour Dates

The Throne members Jay-Z and Kanye West have announced a new itinerary for their upcoming tour. Pre-sales for the tour also started today, rescheduled from July 28th.

Rumors have been surfacing that the decision is based on an argument between Jay-Z and Kanye regarding logistics of the tour. Jay-Z has denied these rumors and claims the real reason is due to an overwhelming demand to add more dates. Strangely, the revised schedule now shows 24 stops instead of the previous 17 stops. The group promises there are more dates to come.

The Throne's Updated 2011 Tour Schedule:

10/29/11 Atlanta, GA Philips Arena
10/30/11 Greensboro, NC Greensboro Coliseum

Kings of Leon Cancel Tour, Hint At Personal Issues

Grammy award-winning rock band Kings of Leon announced they are canceling the rest of their U.S. tour, due to singer Caleb Followill "suffering from vocal issues and exhaustion."

This announcement follows an incident Friday night at their concert in Dallas when Caleb left the stage to take a rest and did not come back as promised.

"I'm gonna go backstage and I'm gonna vomit, I'm gonna drink a beer and I'm gonna come back out and play three more songs," he told fans before walking off the stage.

Bassist, Jared Followill, apologized to fans onstage and later tweeted an indication that there is trouble in the land of Leon.

"I know you guys aren't stupid. I can't lie. There are problems in our band bigger than not drinking enough Gatorade," Jared said.

All 28 tour dates will not be rescheduled, but tickets will be refunded. The band will continue their tour in Canada on September 28, according to a statement from the band's publicist.

This will most likely be the first and last of my attempts to see Kings of Leon in concert. I planned on attending their concert at Jones Beach on August 10, but apparently I will have to make other arrangements. Their unprofessionalism overpowers their talent at this point.

About a year ago, Kings of Leon canceled a concert in St. Louis after a pigeon defecated on Jared. First, pigeon crap. Now, the weather is too hot. What's next? Caleb breaks a nail? I suppose Kings of Leon aren't familiar with the popular saying, "The show must go on," or perhaps in this case, "The tour must go on."

Metallica Celebrates 30th Anniversary With Fans

Metallica announced they will be performing four shows in San Francisco's Fillmore for only members of their fan club, Club Met. The shows will be a celebration of the group's 30th anniversary.

The band promised on their website that there will be “special guests and events, rare songs, varied set lists, odds and ends, and all the nutty stuff you expect from Metallica… fun for the entire family!”

That's not even the best part. Fans will be able to purchase a "four-pack," including tickets to all four shows and an entry into special contests at just $19.81. Single tickets will be sold at $6. Amazing.

If you're not in Club Met, don't worry -- I'm sure some of those $6 tickets will be sold on Ebay and Craigslist  for an extra couple grand or so. But then again, if you aren't a big enough Metallica fan to be in their fan club in the first place, why would you pay such prices?

Metallica Tour Dates:

08/31 – San Francisco, CA @ Moscone Center
09/14 – Bronx, NY @ Yankees Stadium
09/25 – Rio de Janerio, BR @ Rock in Rio
10/28 – Delhi, IN @ F1 Rocks
10/30 – Bangalore, IN @ Bangalore Palace Ground
12/05 – San Francisco, CA @ The Fillmore
12/07 – San Francisco, CA @ The Fillmore
12/09 – San Francisco, CA @ The Fillmore

The Throne

Recently Jay-Z and Kanye West formed a group called The Throne and debuted "Otis," which samples Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness." "Otis" is the new single on their upcoming release Watch the Throne.

"There was a back and forth about whether the name of the song would be 'Otis' or 'Otis Redding,'" Redding's daughter, Karla Redding-Andrews, told billboard.com. "And we just wanted to make sure lyrics and references in the song worked with the legacy of my father. To have two current, legendary artists use the legendary music of Otis Redding-we were quite honored."

The Throne will begin a twenty-four date tour on September 22nd, including two stops in East Rutherford, NJ. Watch The Throne will be released August 8th on iTunes.
